Four smart tips for choosing the perfect sofa

A sofa is often the beating heart of the living space – a place to relax, connect and unwind. But how do you choose a sofa that not only fits your interior style, but also guarantees years of seating comfort? At Stolz Interieur, we're happy to guide you through that process. The tips below will help you get started.

1. Start with your lifestyle (and seating comfort)

A good sofa fits your way of living. Do you like to stretch out with a book or a series, or do you often host guests? Those questions are essential when choosing your sofa. Those who love lounging are best off with a model with a deep seat and soft filling. Those who prefer to sit more upright or often have guests over benefit from a firmer seat with a higher back – ergonomic and socially comfortable.

Pay attention to what's inside too: a beautiful sofa is nothing without a good frame and quality filling. Choose high-quality materials such as cold foam or resilient foam rather than superficial foam, which loses its shape faster. That's also a sustainable choice: a solidly built sofa can later be reupholstered in a new colour or fabric.

Always try your sofa in real life. In our showroom, we're happy to invite you to feel, sit, lie down – because you don't judge seating comfort from a photo.

2. Think in terms of your space

A common mistake? A sofa that's too big for a space that's too small. That takes the air out of your interior. Choose a model that's proportional to your living space instead. Feel free to place your sofa a little away from the wall – that creates breathing room and a less "boxed-in" feeling. Sofas on legs can also be a solution here, since they look visually lighter and give more sense of space.

Another smart tip: avoid a rigid layout. Think looser, more dynamic. For example: combine a two-seater with a large pouf you can flexibly use as a footrest, extra seat or even a coffee table. That creates multiple functions and more freedom in your layout. Separate armchairs around your sofa can also create a warm, inviting atmosphere where conversation takes centre stage.

3. Create balance in shape and volume

Many interiors face the same problem: everything sits low to the ground. Think of a low sofa, a low coffee table, a low TV unit... That brings visual weight into the space. So bring balance in height: work with a floor lamp, a tall plant or a room divider as a visual counterpart. That creates more rhythm and dynamism in your living environment.

Also play with colour and materials. Think, for example, of a warm pouf in a contrasting fabric, or a characterful side chair in wood or leather. Those details make your interior unique and personal.

4. Timeless or expressive? Make a conscious choice

A sofa is an investment. Choose a neutral tone such as sand, beige or grey-green, and you'll usually be safe. Timeless colours stay fresh for a long time and are easy to combine with cushions, throws or rugs in accent colours. That way, you evolve effortlessly with changing trends.

Are you someone who likes to bring colour into your home? Then a striking fabric or bold shape can bring your interior to life. As long as your sofa's basic construction is sturdy and high-quality, you can still change the upholstery or style later. Think sustainably, but don't be afraid to let your personality speak.
